Philadelphia students share their love for Philadelphia.
Jennifer Leckstrom
On my first day moving into the dorms at the University of the Arts, I was overwhelmed. Coming from a small town in the Poconos, Philadelphia was the unfamiliar, intimidating big city. Was this really where I wanted to be?
Soon enough, however, I had gotten my bearings, and realized this was exactly the college experience that I needed.

Kimmel Center at nightThree years later, Philly is now my home. The city has thoroughly enriched my education, helping me to grow both academically and personally.

On the Avenue of the Arts, where I live and study, I am in the middle of the cultural heart of Philly. The Academy of Music, the Merriam Theater and the spectacular new Kimmel Center for Performing Arts surround me with music, dance, and theater all the time.

As a Communications major, I see the whole city as my campus. For my writing classes, I can step out of my front door and interview people from all walks of life. A favorite subject for my video class is the majestic City Hall, topped with the famous William Penn statue, which lies right down the street from my dorm.

The networking I have been able to accomplish in Philadelphia will prove invaluable after I graduate. My friends in other universities outside of the city marvel at the fact that I go to workshops with working professionals who have businesses one block away on Broad Street or Walnut Street.

When I need some time to relax, my favorite walk is along beautiful Chestnut Street, towards Penn's Landing. But wherever I choose to wander, I am surrounded by fantastic city life, from the beautiful stores along Walnut Street to the funky cafes and shops along South Street. There's so much to see, to do, so many restaurants to try - honestly, it's a student's paradise.

Midway through my junior year, I find myself extremely satisfied with the choice I made in going to a school in Philadelphia. The skills I have gathered will stay with me wherever I go, and I know I am well prepared to enter the job market. Whether I decide to edit a documentary, write for an online magazine or become a creative director for an advertising agency, I am in the midst of my future here in the city.
